New York, New York
Each year Crain's New York Business publishes a City Facts issue -- everything from the richest New Yorkers to the zip codes with the most bank branches. Here are a few of the ones that I found interesting...
- 19.7M people live in the New York metro region, making it one of the world's largest.
- Brooklyn would rank 4th nationally if it were an independent city. Queens would be number 5.
- $9.02 out of every $100 goes to state and local taxes -- the highest tax burden of any large U.S. City.
- $67B: NYC expenditures in 2007, more than spending by 46 of the states
- New York is the most diverse city in the world, based on the size of its foreign-born population and the number of countries they come from.
- 1.4M Jews live in NYC, Westchester and Long Island -- the largest community outside of Israel
- 2,021 bridges in NYC. There are also six tunnels.
- 18 acres: International territory occupied by the UN whose arrival in 1950 gave NYC its main claim to the title of world capital.
- 25% of the world's gold bullion is stored beneath the Federal Reserve Bank on Wall Street
- 40% of Americans can trace their roots through Ellis Island.
- $143.06 is the average meal cost at the 20 most expensive restaurants in NYC in 2008
